The Iowa CareGivers' “A Call to Leadership: A Direct Care Professional’s Guide to Developing Leadership Skills” program is a one-day educational program for direct care professionals held every year at multiple locations in the state. It encourages those who work in direct care to think more broadly about leadership outside of the workplace, professionalism, and how to become a spokesperson and role model for the direct care profession. Graduates receive a certificate of attendance and a class pin.

Those who have chosen a career in direct care took part in a conversation about what they view as “The Toughest Job You’ll Ever Love”. Working in a high demand occupation that is dwindling in numbers is challenging. Their discussions about how they can help to educate the public about who they are and what they do for Iowans of all ages and abilities produced laughter, tears, and inspirational messages that will become part of a future messaging campaign. Thanks to all who participated!

I left Iowa Central Community College proudly wearing my new “Direct Care: The Toughest Job You’ll Ever Love” t-shirt. Standing in line at the coffee shop (refueling for the ride home) a stranger was staring at me. Finally she spoke, “Are you in direct care?” she asked.
“Yes, I am.”

Direct Care Worker Leadership Council
The leadership program, “A Call to Leadership” is required to apply to serve on the Leadership Council. Council members must also submit applications and go through a selection process.
